Third-ranked Wayzata had won 17 straight games until they faced Eden Prairie last Thursday in a Lake Conference boys basketball showdown. The Eagles shocked the high-powered Trojans on their own court with a 92-86 victory. Three nights prior to their upset win over Wayzata, the Eagles trounced St. Michael-Albertville 86-68 on the hardwood at Eden Prairie High School. It’s about 36 miles from Eden Prairie High School to Buffalo, Minnesota. On a sunny afternoon this past Saturday, the Eden Prairie boys hockey team loaded the bus and made the journey north and west. The fourth-ranked Eagles won their first two brackets against Minneapolis Southwest and Shakopee, respectively, before falling to second-ranked Waconia 34-29 in the finals. The clock was nearing the eight-minute mark of the first period before a packed house at Pagel Activity Center in Minnetonka on Thursday night. By 9:25 p.m. on Saturday, Rink 1 at Eden Prairie Community Center was empty with the exception of Ryan and Nick Koering. The two brothers sat on the Eagles bench, looking out on the darkened arena after the Eagles’ loss to sixth-ranked Wayzata.
