EP teens win college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships

Two students from Eden Prairie are among the more than 2,600 winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities announced on Wednesday, June 1.

• Lilian J. Liu, of Eden Prairie, won a National Merit University of Southern California Scholarship. Liu, a senior at the Blake School’s Northrop campus in Minneapolis, plans to study law. 
• Amoligha G. Timma, of Eden Prairie, won a National Merit University of Minnesota Scholarship. The Eden Prairie High School senior plans to study computer science.

Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among the finalists in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution. These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship. 

This is the third National Merit Scholar release of awards in 2022.

The National Merit Scholarship Corp. (NMSC) named recipients of corporate-sponsored awards on April 27 and winners of National Merit $2,500 Scholarships on May 11.

Two EPHS seniors were recipients of corporate-sponsored awards. 

Sreya Patri, whose probable career field is listed as political science, won a National Merit Eaton Scholarship. The Eaton Charitable Fund sponsors awards for children of employees of Eaton Corp. 

Samir Sarma, whose probable career field is listed as materials engineering, won a National Merit Emerson Electric Co. Scholarship. Emerson’s Merit Scholarship awards recognize outstanding children of Emerson employees.

In May, Eden Prairie resident Ava Chen, a senior at Minnetonka High School, won a National Merit $2,500 scholarship. Chen’s probable career field is listed as consulting. 

An additional group of Scholars will be announced in July, bringing the total number of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship recipients in the 2022 competition to about 4,000.
