Eden Prairie Local News (EPLN) received recognition this month in a national awards competition. The EPLN series “Silent Struggles” on teen suicide and mental health, published in October and November 2023, was recognized as a finalist in the Nonprofit News Awards (or INNYs).

Silent Struggles was recognized as a finalist in the Community Champion division of the awards, which recognizes an organization that made a significant contribution to the well-being of its community through a journalism-centered project or service.

The award highlighted the work of Silent Struggles contributors Jim Bayer (project lead), Juliana Allen, Stuart Sudak, Mark Weber, and Amy Nylander.

The 2024 Nonprofit News Awards received over 600 entries. EPLN editor Stuart Sudak attended the award ceremony at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta, Georgia, which was held in conjunction with the Online News Association’s annual conference.

“It was a tremendous honor to represent Eden Prairie Local News in Atlanta and hear our name announced as a finalist,” Sudak said. “The recognition of our Silent Struggles series on teen suicide and mental health underscores the vital role of local journalism in addressing issues that have profoundly impacted our community.”

The INNYs are a program of the Institute for Nonprofit News, a national organization dedicated to strengthening and supporting independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan news organizations. EPLN is a member of the Institute for Nonprofit News (INN). EPLN was also recognized as a finalist in the 2023 Nonprofit News Awards competition, for photographer Gillian Holte’s work on a photo gallery of the Ethiopian Fest held at Eden Prairie High School in 2022.
