Several decades ago, a group of local women saw a need to develop programs that supported and protected victims of domestic abuse.

“We are now in our 41st year,” said Emmy Levanetz, communications and development director for Cornerstone Advocacy Services.

Cornerstone will hold its Together in Hope fundraising luncheon on Friday, Sept. 27, offering guests an opportunity to meet with community members and receive updates on Cornerstone’s programs.

“It will be an opportunity to raise funds that support our life-changing services,” Levanetz said. “Guests will be able to hear a message from former Public Safety Commissioner John Harrington and to engage with Cornerstone staff and experience survivor stories.”

The luncheon will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency, 3200 E. 81st St., in Bloomington. Tickets are $50.

Levanetz said Cornerstone originally had temporary shelters for victims and their children in Bloomington and Minneapolis, but now has cooperative programs with area shelters. It currently has offices in the original shelter locations.

“We have a staff of about 50 persons comprised of full-time, part-time and volunteers,” she said.

In a news release, Cornerstone emphasized its mission to “create communities where individuals and families are safe and children thrive.” The organization said, “Cornerstone advocates, educates and leads the way to social change.”

The release further stated, “Cornerstone’s ultimate goal is to reduce the prevalence of domestic violence, sexual violence, human trafficking and general crime.”
