Minnesota Youth Reading Awards

The Star of the North Award is chosen annually, a picture book voted on by children in grades K-2.

• “The Box Turtle” by Vanessa Roeder won Star of the North Award in 2023.

The Maud Hart Lovelace Book Award is a work of fiction, nominated in two categories, Division I and Division II. Students in grades 3-5 vote for a Division I winner and students in grades 6-8 vote for a Division II winner.

• “City Spies” by James Ponti won in Division I and “White Bird” by R.J. Palacio won in Division II.

James Ponti, author of the Maud Hart Lovelace Division I winner and Division II honorable mention “City Spies,” will be here in person to accept their award. In addition, Vanessa Roeder, author of the Star of the North winner “The Box Turtle,” will also be here in person to accept her award.
