Fall Buckthorn Bust
On Saturday, September 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., volunteers from the Hopkins VFW Post 425 will return to Birch Island Woods for the Fall Follow-Up Buckthorn Bust, kicking off the first fall invasive removal event of the season hosted by Friends of Eden Prairie Parks (FEPP).
Buckthorn, a fast-spreading invasive shrub, threatens Minnesota’s native habitats by crowding out local plant species, degrading soil quality, and reducing biodiversity. FEPP’s mission-driven volunteer efforts aim to restore balance to local parks by removing buckthorn and reestablishing native plant communities.
The City of Eden Prairie will provide tools and supplies, but feel free to bring your own pruning saws, loppers and gloves that you may want to use. A brief review on how to identify buckthorn and instructions for cutting or pulling will be provided. All participants must sign a volunteer waiver form, which will be available at the event site.
The public is invited to join this impactful day of service. No prior experience is required, and all tools and training will be provided. Volunteers should dress for the weather and wear gloves and sturdy shoes. Learn more at: https://friendsofepparks.org/event/birch-island-woods-buckthorn-removal
