Rep. Kotyza-Witthuhn reflects on progress, goals

Letter to EditorBy Letter to EditorOctober 31, 20242 Mins Read

I’m Carlie Kotyza-Witthuhn, and it has been my honor to represent Eden Prairie since 2019. My husband and I are raising our four kids in Eden Prairie, and we also feel many of your families’ struggles. We all want to know we can make ends meet at the end of the month. Our community has seen much growth and change, but I still know many things to be true.

    I believe that:

    • Everyone, white, black, brown, or Indigenous, deserves to feel safe and welcome in our community
    • Childcare shouldn’t cost as much or more than a mortgage or rent payment
    • Any family who wants to own a home should have a clear path to affording it in Eden Prairie
    • Minnesotans should be able to pursue a college education and not be in debt for the rest of their lives
    • We all do better when we all do better

Because my work as your representative is rooted in these beliefs, I made sure we lowered the cost of prescription drugs, fed our kids free breakfast and lunch at school, and allowed students to attend a Minnesota state university for free. I sponsored our nation-leading Child Tax Credit, which is already helping over 200,000 families and reducing childhood poverty. After fighting for years, we finally passed common-sense gun violence prevention policies like universal background checks and a red flag law. You no longer have to choose between taking your kid to doctor’s appointments and taking unpaid time at work because we passed Paid Family Medical Leave and increased all workers’ access to Earned Safe and Sick Time.

Despite the progress we’ve made, I know there’s more work ahead. We can do more to bring down the costs of childcare and eldercare. Corporations still have too much leeway to price gouge and take advantage of consumers trying to stay healthy.

As our community continues to evolve, I’m committed to elevating your thoughts and ideas, highlighting Eden Prairie’s diversity, and bringing everyone’s voice to the table in Saint Paul. Together, we are building a brighter future.

Minnesota Rep. Carlie Kotyza-Witthuhn (49-B, Eden Prairie)
