EPHS Drama presents ‘Matilda,’ Nov 8-9 and 14-16

Tickets are now on sale for “Matilda,” Eden Prairie High School (EPHS) Drama’s upcoming musical production.

Based on Roald Dahl’s subversively humorous book and featuring music by composer Tim Minchin, the musical centers on Matilda Wormwood, a clever, book-loving 5-year-old. Matilda uses her wits, kindness, and telekinetic powers to take charge of her destiny, outwit her bullies, and create a happy ending for herself and her beloved teacher, Miss Honey.

Performances will be in the EPHS Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. on Nov. 8-9 and Nov. 14-16. There will also be a matinee at 1 p.m. on Nov. 16. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and senior citizens and can be purchased online at GoFan.co.

In addition to Matilda, the musical features memorable characters like her classmates Amanda Thripp and Bruce Bogtrotter, terrifying headmistress Miss Trunchbull, and Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood, Matilda’s self-absorbed parents.

Matilda’s storyline showcases reading as a superpower and ultimately proves that being young doesn’t mean you have to put up with someone else trying to control your story, according to Laurie Nebeker, who is the show’s director and an EPHS English and drama teacher.

Nebeker said, “(Matilda) sings, ‘If you’re little, you can do a lot; you mustn’t let a little thing like little stop you.’ To overcome the tyranny of Miss Trunchbull, Matilda and her classmates discover, ‘Sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty.’ Watching them carry out the naughtiness of their revolt will entertain and inspire audiences.”

The production will feature more than 80 students in the cast, pit orchestra, and tech crew. With additional students who have worked on sets, props, and costuming crews, over 100 students will be part of this production.
