‘MOYA’ by Zip Zap Circus combines heart and high-flying acrobatics

I recently attended the Saturday 11 a.m. performance of “MOYA” by Zip Zap Circus at the Children’s Theatre Company, and it was nothing short of captivating.

The show, running through Oct. 20, is an energetic experience that audiences of all ages can enjoy. I brought along my newly 3-year-old nephew, who didn’t stay seated the entire time but still loved the performance, particularly the “singing” (which I think he meant to include singing and chanting). While his attention wandered a bit, I noticed the dynamic performance fully absorbed many young audience members.

For me, the dancing was the highlight. Under the expert choreography of Mzwandile Ngubeni, the performers showcased an impressive combination of acrobatics, gymnastics, and technical dance skills. They weren’t just flipping and balancing but executing intricate, professional-level dance routines in sync with the story. The athleticism and grace of the performers were truly jaw-dropping.

One of the most touching aspects of “MOYA” is its inspiration from a true story. The main character, Jacobus Claassen, takes the audience on an emotional journey that mirrors the real-life experiences of many of the performers. “Moya” is a deeply personal reflection of the lives of these talented individuals, many of whom hail from disadvantaged communities in South Africa.

Zip Zap Circus, founded in 1992 in Cape Town, is a social project that offers circus arts training as a path to transformation. This spirit of hope and unity shines through in every moment of the show.
