Members of Eden Prairie’s Human Rights and Diversity Commission announced the 2023 Human Rights Award winners at the May 21 City Council meeting.
The awards honor individuals and organizations fostering an inclusive community spirit through various actions and programs.
Individual Award: Hodan Nur
Hodan Nur was recognized for her outstanding leadership in supporting East African families and youth.
According to the award announcement, Nur has advocated for excellence in children’s education and provided guidance on avoiding negative influences through her work in schools and the Irshad Islamic Center. Her compassionate approach and dedication to fostering youth leadership and community care have made a significant impact.
Nonprofit Award: The PROP Shop
The PROP Shop received the Nonprofit Award for its long-standing commitment to mobilizing the Eden Prairie community to support neighbors in need.
The organization provides free clothing, household goods, and furniture to those experiencing hardship. With hundreds of volunteers and generous community donations, the PROP Shop has become a cornerstone nonprofit, treating clients with dignity and respect, according to the award announcement.
Business Award: Jill Slipper Scholtz
Jill Slipper Scholtz was honored with the Business Award for her efforts in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
As the diversity committee chair for the Eden Prairie Community Foundation, Scholtz has led initiatives tied to the Eden Prairie Race Equity Report. Her leadership in hosting community learning events and fostering an inclusive atmosphere has been exemplary, the award announcement stated.
Nominations for the Human Rights Award are accepted annually in January, with recipients selected by the Human Rights and Diversity Commission in March. Winners are recognized for upholding the values of the Eden Prairie Manifesto.
