Volunteer judges needed for CMS-hosted History Day regionals

The Eden Prairie community is invited to help inspire the next generation of young people to learn about history, think critically, and tell important stories in a creative and compelling way.

Volunteers are needed to judge at the upcoming National History Day (NHD) competition at Eden Prairie’s Central Middle School (CMS) from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 2. Students competing in the Metro Junior West Regionals event are in grades 6 to 8.

Prior experience is not needed. Judges have a short training session, then work in teams of two or three to view, watch, or listen to student projects.

They then engage with the students by asking them questions about their work and then fill out rubrics and feedback sheets. Judges will also select projects to advance to the State competition, which takes place in April.

National History Day is sometimes described as being like a science fair — but for history.

Students create individual or group projects on a topic of their choice. Projects are built around an annual theme, which this year is “Turning Points in History.” Students can create a documentary, website, exhibit, performance, or write a paper.

Anyone interested in participating in the event as a volunteer judge can learn more and sign up here.
