District 6 special election rescheduled to May 14, 2024

Hennepin County has rescheduled the special election for Commissioner District 6 due to concerns that the original date coincided with the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr.

After discussions with the county auditor and the Hennepin County Elections Department, the new date has been set for Tuesday, May 14, 2024. If needed, a special primary has been slated for Tuesday, April 30, 2024.

Commissioner District 6 covers 66 precincts, stretching from Mound in the west through Edina to the east; it’s worth noting that northern Eden Prairie is also within the district, even if not shown on this map. Photo credit: Hennepin County

Hennepin County’s Commissioner District 6 covers 66 precincts, including areas like northern Eden Prairie, Deephaven, Edina, Excelsior, Hopkins, Mound, Minnetonka, Orono, and Wayzata.

Chris LaTondresse, inaugurated as District 6 commissioner in January 2021, announced his decision to resign in August and officially left the position on Sept. 21 to become the chief executive officer at the Beacon Interfaith Housing Collaborative.

The winner of the special election will fill the remainder of LaTondresse’s term, which will run through December 2024. A county spokesperson has said that the commissioner’s seat will stay vacant until then.

Details on the special election schedule are available on the Hennepin County Elections website.
