On agenda: controversial townhomes and contract to oversee city hall remodeling

Mark WeberBy Mark WeberSeptember 16, 20232 Mins Read
The Tuesday, Oct. 3, meeting of the Eden Prairie City Council is in the Council Chambers and starts at 7 p.m.

A townhome development opposed by many neighbors and the hiring of a firm to help construct new quarters for the Police Department are among items on the Eden Prairie City Council’s regular meeting agenda Tuesday evening, Sept. 19.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the Eden Prairie City Center, 8080 Mitchell Road.

It includes a public hearing on Kinsley Townhomes, a Pulte Homes plan to construct 42 townhomes on a 6.13-acre “infill” piece of property southeast of the intersection of Pioneer Trail (County Road 1) and Dell Road in the city’s southwestern corner.

The parcel is bordered by single-family homes and townhomes owned by a large number of residents who want changes to the plan. For example, they oppose city staff’s push for an extension of now-dead-end Valley Road westward to Dell Road as part of this project. The number of units planned has also drawn objections from nearby residents.

The city’s planning commission on Aug. 28 recommended city approval of the project, but on a 4-3 vote.

On the council’s consent agenda – a list of items typically approved with one vote without discussion – is a contract to have Kraus-Anderson Construction Co. manage the remodeling of the west end of city hall – no longer rented by Eden Prairie Schools and United Natural Foods, Inc. (UNFI) – to provide larger quarters for the Police Department, including indoor parking of police vehicles.
