EP family grief center acquires Brainerd bereavement camp

EPLN Staff ReportsBy EPLN Staff ReportsJuly 28, 20232 Mins Read

Brighter Days Family Grief Center, a grief support institution in Eden Prairie, is expanding its reach by acquiring Camp Journey, a free bereavement camp in Brainerd for children.

Camp Journey, supported by the Brainerd Noon Rotary Club, has hosted grieving youth, ages 5-17, for a weekend bereavement camp for the past 15 years.

The Camp Journey committee aimed to find an organization specializing in working with grieving children and bereavement camps to ensure the camp’s ongoing presence.

“The committee believes we have found this organization in Brighter Days Family Grief Center,” said Carol Johnson, committee lead. “Their widely recognized reputation and their focus of compassion is very evident in what they do.”

Brighter Days — known for its two cost-free bereavement camps within the Twin Cities — views the acquisition of Camp Journey as a chance to extend its services.

“As a statewide grief center, we realize there are many families who cannot get to our other camp locations,” said Carolyn Kinzel, founder and executive director of Brighter Days. “This is a fantastic opportunity to provide additional support to grieving children and families who reside in the northern part of our state.”

Since its founding in 2017, Brighter Days Family Grief Center has provided care for families affected by death or a terminal diagnosis of a loved one. Addressing both the psychological and logistical needs of families, it offers its compassionate and comprehensive services at no cost.
