An Eden Prairie public safety chaplain is under investigation by the Minnesota State Patrol in connection with the Aug. 21 hit-and-run that injured a mother and her children, according to a city update Friday night.
The Eden Prairie Police Department said a search warrant made public Friday acknowledges the State Patrol’s investigation into the volunteer chaplain. The individual named in the warrant is not currently volunteering in that role pending the outcome of the investigation.
The crash happened about 8:20 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at Mitchell Road and Chestnut Drive, where a vehicle struck 27-year-old Spogmai Kamawal and two of her children. Her 2-year-old daughter, Somaia, had been listed in critical condition as of Thursday at Hennepin County Medical Center. Kamawal and another child were treated and released, while two older siblings walking ahead were not hurt.
The case was transferred from Eden Prairie police to the State Patrol on Aug. 25.
KARE 11, which reviewed the search warrant, reported that the State Patrol took over the case because of a conflict of interest once Eden Prairie police learned of the suspect. The station also reported that the suspect gave a voluntary statement and that troopers sought access to his phone records.
Eden Prairie Local News has also requested a copy of the warrant and will update this story when it becomes available.
