After 801 submissions, three finalists and a week of voting, Eden Prairie Liquor announced Friday that its new THC gummy will be named Little Berry on the Prairie.
Eden Prairie resident Kristin Kelley submitted the winning entry.
The municipal liquor store announced last month that it would release a THC gummy marketed as a sleep aid and invited residents to submit name ideas. The top three finalists were Little Berry on the Prairie, Eden BerrieZzz and Prairie Dreamin’.
Residents voted for their favorite name on the Eden Prairie Liquor’s Facebook page.
Jaime Urbina, Eden Prairie Liquor operations manager, said a panel worked together to narrow the initial 801 submissions to three. They first cut names related to marijuana – because the edibles are hemp-derived – as well as those submitted by non-Eden Prairie residents and any with negative connotations.
“When we came down to it, we had 10 to 15 names selected, and then we just went through each name and had everybody give their feedback on the names,” Urbina said. “And then these were the three that ended up staying.”
Now that a name has been chosen, Urbina said the next step is to create a logo for its packaging. The process will take between one and three weeks and will likely incorporate berries and a prairie to pay homage to the gummy’s name.
Urbina said that once a logo is designed, the gummy’s manufacturer, Minneapolis-based Emerald Elements, will begin production and then packaging. Production takes two to four weeks, and packaging takes about one to two weeks.
The gummies will likely hit shelves in late September, Urbina said.
City Manager Rick Getschow said the overall public response to the endeavor has been positive and the city has not received backlash.
Urbina said they received submissions from across Minnesota and even a few from out-of-state residents in Wisconsin and South Carolina. Aside from some disappointment from those whose names weren’t chosen, the public has been supportive and excited about the new product.
“Everybody seems pretty happy about it,” Urbina said.
