Drivers traveling through Eden Prairie should prepare for a full weekend closure of Highway 5 starting at 10 p.m. Friday, July 25, as the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) continues roadwork between Eden Prairie Road and Interstate 494.
Highway 5 will be closed in both directions between Eden Prairie Road and Mitchell Road through 5 a.m. Monday, July 28. A second full closure in the same stretch is scheduled from 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, through 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4. During both weekends, traffic will be detoured via Highway 212 and Highway 41.
The closures are part of a $7 million MnDOT project to repair concrete, repave shoulders, and replace guardrails on Highways 5 and 212 between Eden Prairie Road and I-494. The pavement in this stretch is more than 20 years old and in need of maintenance, according to MnDOT. The project is expected to be completed in September 2025.
In addition to the full closures, ongoing single-lane reductions remain in effect through early September:
- Eastbound and westbound Highway 5 and Highway 212: Reduced to one lane between I-494 and Eden Prairie Road
Several ramps are also scheduled to close in the coming days:
- Mitchell Road ramp to westbound Highway 5: Closed from 5 a.m. Friday, July 25, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 28
- Eastbound Highway 212 ramp to eastbound I-494: Closed from 6 a.m. Monday, July 28, to 5 p.m. Thursday, July 31
- Westbound Highway 212/Highway 5 ramp to Mitchell Road: Closed from 6 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, to 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1
A previous closure of the eastbound Highway 212 ramp to Wallace Road ran from 7 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, to 5 p.m. Friday, July 25.
All dates are tentative and weather dependent. When work is complete, MnDOT says the highways will offer a smoother and safer ride. MnDOT urges drivers to slow down, stay alert, and use caution in work zones.
