A Minneapolis man is facing a felony theft charge after allegedly failing to return more than $30,000 worth of rented equipment to an Eden Prairie business.

Blake Reed Spencer, 30, was charged July 15 in Hennepin County District Court with felony theft of leased or rented personal property.

According to the criminal complaint, Spencer rented a 2020 Toro Dingo TX100 skid steer and a tilt-bed trailer from A to Z Rental in Eden Prairie on Oct. 24, 2023.

The following day, police in University Park, Illinois, contacted the business to report the trailer had been found abandoned there. When an A to Z employee called Spencer, he said he would return the equipment within an hour. After learning the trailer had been found by police, he hung up and did not respond to further attempts to reach him.

The skid steer, valued at $31,500, remains missing, according to the complaint.

Police reviewed surveillance video showing Spencer renting the equipment. His first court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 5 at the Hennepin County Government Center in Minneapolis.
