Riley Lake Beach reopens after algae bloom clears

EPLN Staff ReportsBy EPLN Staff ReportsJune 26, 20251 Min Read

Riley Lake Beach in Eden Prairie has reopened for swimming following updated water testing that confirmed the lake is safe, the city announced Thursday afternoon.

The beach had been closed since June 17 after a bloom of blue-green algae was detected near the beach and boat launch. The algae, which can pose health risks to humans and animals, had prompted city officials to close the site until water quality testing showed it was safe to swim.

Lifeguards are scheduled to resume regular hours – 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. – on Friday, June 27, according to the city.

Blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, occur naturally in Minnesota lakes but can become hazardous in warm, stagnant, nutrient-rich water. Blooms may resemble pea soup or bright green paint and often emit a strong odor as they decay. Health officials advise avoiding water contact when algae are visible or when water clarity is less than three feet.
