    EPLN OBITUARIES

Stephen Germain Born, age 82, of Chaska, died peacefully on Friday, June 6, 2025, at Auburn Manor Care Center, Chaska.

A memorial Mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Guardian Angels Catholic Church, 218 West Second St., Chaska, with Father Tony VanderLoop presiding. The family will receive friends on Monday, June 16, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Bertas Funeral Home, 200 West Third St., Chaska, and one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Inurnment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Chaska American Legion.

Steve was born on Nov. 13, 1942, in Richfield to Germain “Primo” and Frances “Fran” (Ebert) Born, one of three children. He was baptized, confirmed and graduated from the parochial high school at Guardian Angels Catholic School in Chaska. He graduated from Mankato State with a bachelor’s degree in education and taught history at Eden Prairie High School until he retired. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy.

Steve never met a sporting event or war movie he didn’t love and knew everything about.  Steve taught for over 30 years and coached for 47 years at Eden Prairie High School.  He touched countless young lives and loved every minute of it. He forged friendships that he cherished – friendships that were there until the end.

As a lifelong resident of Chaska, he was considered by many to be the unofficial mayor of the city. If he wasn’t down at Chaska Cubs Athletic Park taking tickets and cheering on the team, you could find him at the Chaska Community Center, putting smiles on faces, or at the Legion playing sheepshead or any card game he could gather – and always with a smile, especially if he was winning.

Steve traveled throughout his life, all over the world. He chaperoned international trips with students and staff from Eden Prairie and took countless trips (too many to count) with friends – trips sustained by laughter alone. The stories never get old and are still remembered to this day.

Steve never met anyone he didn’t touch – with a kind word, advice only he understood, or a pat on the back for a new friend.

Steve was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sue; his parents, Germain “Primo” and Fran (Ebert) Born; his in-laws, Eldon and Eileen (Nelson) Sexton; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Lee Schomaker, Shirley Quast, John Sexton, Russel Sexton, Boyce Harrell; and his nephew, Tony Johnson.

He is survived by his children, Stephanie Born of Nashville, Tennessee, and John (Gina) Born of Chaska; grandsons, Mac and Joseph; sisters, Rita Schomaker of Mound, and Cheryl (Richard) Johnson of St. Paul; sister-in-law, Sharonn Harrell; brother- and sister-in-law, Tom and Mary Sexton; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Arrangements are being handled by Bertas Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Chaska.
