A 51-year-old Eden Prairie man is facing felony charges after police say he assaulted his wife last month, tying a rope around her neck and threatening to kill her.

Arvind Singh is charged in Hennepin County District Court with domestic assault by strangulation and threats of violence. He was arrested April 17 and released April 28 under court-ordered conditions.

According to the criminal complaint, Eden Prairie police responded to a 911 call at Singh’s home at about 2:45 p.m. April 17. Officers found Singh’s wife with facial swelling, bruising, and injuries consistent with strangulation. She reported difficulty seeing and swallowing.

Singh admitted to officers that he struck his wife during an argument and took her phone. The victim told police that Singh repeatedly punched her, tied a rope around her neck, and pulled it tight while pinning her to the floor. She said he threatened to kill her multiple times during the assault.

The complaint states that Singh sat on the victim’s chest and stomach area while pulling the rope. She was uncertain how long the rope was around her neck or how long he remained on top of her.

Officers documented bruising on both sides of the victim’s face and neck, petechiae in both eyes, and swelling consistent with strangulation. She also had injuries to her lip, upper arm, and reported difficulty swallowing and seeing.

Singh is under a Domestic Abuse No Contact Order (DANCO) and must stay away from the victim’s home, workplace, and school. He is also barred from possessing firearms or ammunition and must follow geographic restrictions imposed by the court. He is represented by a public defender.

An omnibus hearing is scheduled for June 20 in Hennepin County District Court.

If convicted, Singh faces up to three years in prison and a $5,000 fine for the domestic assault by strangulation charge, and up to five years and a $10,000 fine for threats of violence.
