Judge denies defense motion in Eden Prairie murder case; next hearing set for June

Stuart SudakBy Stuart SudakMay 6, 20252 Mins Read

A Hennepin County judge last month denied a key defense motion in the case against Dalal Bayle Idd, a 29-year-old Eden Prairie man charged with murdering his younger brother, 7-year-old Abdullahi Ahmed Idd.

Judge Mark Kappelhoff issued the 32-page ruling on April 19, rejecting a request to suppress statements Idd made to police before his arrest. The defense had argued that Idd’s comments during a Sept. 12, 2023, welfare check were inadmissible because officers had not read him his Miranda rights.

The judge disagreed, finding that Idd was not in custody at the time and spoke voluntarily with officers who were responding to his 911 call reporting mental health concerns. Police arrived at the family’s Eden Prairie home and spoke with Idd outside. During the encounter, he made vague, unsettling remarks suggesting he had harmed someone. He was then transported by ambulance to a hospital.

Officers later entered the home to check on other children and found Abdullahi’s body. Investigators say the boy had been strangled.

Idd is charged with second-degree murder with intent but without premeditation, a felony under Minnesota law. He has remained in custody since his arrest, with bail set at $1.5 million.

At an April 24 omnibus hearing, Judge Kappelhoff ordered that bail remain unchanged. A second omnibus hearing is scheduled for June 12.

If convicted, Idd faces up to 40 years in prison.
