History enthusiasts and community members are invited to volunteer as judges for several upcoming National History Day in Minnesota competitions.

This includes the Metro Junior West regional contest, which will be held Saturday, March 8, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Central Middle School.

National History Day in Minnesota is part of the Minnesota Historical Society’s educational programming. It promotes in-depth research and critical analysis for students in grades 6 to 12.

Students explore historical topics through projects ranging from performances, exhibits, and documentary films to websites and research papers. This year’s National History Day theme is “Rights and Responsibilities in History.”

Judges evaluate student projects and engage with participants eager to share what they’ve learned. They also provide valuable feedback, including to those advancing to state or national contests. In addition, judges often explore new areas and gain fresh perspectives on historical topics through the projects.

No prior judging experience is necessary at local and regional level contests. Training and orientation will be provided to ensure that all judges feel prepared and confident in their roles.

Anyone interested in becoming a judge can learn more and register by visiting the National History Day in Minnesota website and clicking on Contests & Judging.
