United Properties’ The Ellie recently received the 2024 Sustainable Eden Prairie Award in recognition of its water conservation efforts. The four-story, 239-unit apartment building is located on 6.4 acres of land at 8075 Eden Prairie Road.

“We’re thrilled that The Ellie has been recognized for its thoughtful approach to sustainable design, especially in the area of water conservation,” says Carrie Eggleston, senior development manager, United Properties. “We set out to create a sustainable home within the ‘garden of the prairie,’ and The Ellie is just that — a modern example of an innovative, environmentally conscious development.”

The Sustainable Eden Prairie Award recognizes the property’s water conservation efforts, which include: WaterSense showerheads in all units; rainwater collection systems for stormwater reuse in resident garden plots; green roof installation over the building’s entry, along with six “green pocket” roof sections on the fourth floor; a reduced-size, on-site pool that minimizes water consumption; and a central courtyard that maximizes green space with bioswales and native plantings to filter stormwater, while permeable soil mixes aid stormwater absorption and treatment.

The Ellie also incorporates sustainability efforts in energy efficiency, such as using Xcel Energy’s Energy Design Assistance (EDA) program to implement computer energy modeling for optimal energy use and cost savings; landscape preservation, including integrating seven heritage trees on-site into its design; and waste management, including recycling more than half of waste generated on-site and the relocation of four single-family homes originally located on the site.
