Eden Prairie resident Wendi Russo, a first-time Republican candidate for Minnesota House District 49B, is challenging DFL incumbent Carlie Kotyza-Witthuhn in the Nov. 5 election with a platform focused on affordability, public safety, small business support, and local control over education.

A small business owner, TV host, and community volunteer, Russo says she brings a moderate perspective aimed at addressing issues she feels are often overshadowed by polarized politics.

“I’ve never been involved in politics before, but I’ve seen how polarized it’s become,” Russo said. “I felt someone needed to represent a balanced voice, especially with rising costs and safety concerns that affect everyday life here.”

Russo, who has spent over 20 years in Eden Prairie, has worked as a shopping channel TV host and as a women’s empowerment and career coach. She describes herself as a “moderate Republican” who has a history of voting Democrat.

“I was a Democrat most of my life,” she explained. “But the political landscape has changed, and I think a balanced perspective is needed to keep Minnesota thriving.”

A background in community work and broadcasting

Originally from Connecticut, Russo attended the University of Vermont before moving to Minnesota, where she has been deeply involved in community service. Alongside her work on television, she volunteers with organizations like Dress for Success, Meals on Wheels, and Dwelling Place, a nonprofit that supports survivors of domestic violence.

“Having overcome my own challenges, including a period of homelessness, I understand the importance of empowerment,” she said. “It’s what drives me to give back.”

Russo and her husband, a part-time police officer, have a college-aged daughter who graduated from Eden Prairie High School. “We moved here for the community and the schools,” she said, adding that her appreciation for local educators informs her desire for greater local control over education.

Policy priorities: Affordability, safety, and small business support

Russo sees affordability as a pressing issue, especially for seniors. “When I bought my first home here, it was affordable. Today, property taxes are skyrocketing,” she said, noting that her own property taxes recently rose by 14%. “I’ve met seniors who feel they’re being taxed out of their homes.”

Safety is another key focus, influenced by her family’s background in law enforcement. Russo has cited increasing crime as a concern, saying she wants to support law enforcement through consistent funding and enforcement of existing laws. “We need to ensure that law enforcement can do their jobs effectively,” she said, mentioning anticipated retirements and recruitment challenges facing police departments across Minnesota.

For small businesses, Russo advocates for more flexibility, particularly with mandates like paid family leave. “Our small businesses don’t have the resources that big corporations do,” she explained. “We need policies that support local businesses without putting undue pressure on them.”

Moderate stance on reproductive rights and education

Russo describes herself as a moderate on reproductive rights. “I believe in a woman’s right to choose but think there should be limits,” she said, expressing concerns about later-term abortions. She also noted recent cuts to crisis pregnancy center funding, adding, “Women should have real options and support for whatever choice they make.”

In education, Russo praised Eden Prairie’s high graduation rates and quality schools and advocates for decision-making tailored to local needs. “Our educators know what’s best for students, and they should have the flexibility to make those decisions without top-down mandates,” she said.

Addressing political polarization and views on national politics

Running as a Republican in a predominantly Democratic area, Russo acknowledges the challenges but emphasizes her focus on local issues.

“I want to represent all voices and foster civil conversations,” she said. “People aren’t voting for a national figure – they’re voting for someone who will prioritize local needs.”

Russo also responded to questions about her stance on former President Donald Trump, a topic that frequently comes up in door-to-door conversations.

“Frankly, it doesn’t matter what I think of him,” she said. “This race is about what’s best for Eden Prairie and Minnesota, not about a national figure. My focus is on serving the people here.”

With a campaign centered on affordability, safety, and small business support, Russo describes her approach as rooted in transparency and civility.

“My goal is to ensure people feel heard and respected,” she said. “This campaign is about representing everyone in this district, making sure all voices are heard.”
