Support balanced leadership in Minnesota Legislature

Letter to EditorBy Letter to EditorNovember 1, 20242 Mins Read

Election advice for the home stretch:

    1. No matter who you vote for at the top of the ticket, be open to voting for someone on the other side. We should always vote for the best candidate.
    2. Our state government is not like Santa Claus. There is not a big bag from which legislators can pull money for every project or great idea. Every dollar spent (and wasted) comes from the taxpayers.
    3. Just like you have had to tighten your budget to deal with inflation, the state needs to tighten its spending. The Democrat trifecta spent the entire $17.6 billion surplus and added an additional $10 billion in new taxes. This isn’t sustainable.
    4. You can’t keep “taxing the rich” or “taxing corporations.” Minnesota is in the top six states for personal income taxes and is No. 1 in corporate income taxes. People and businesses can, and do, move to where taxes are more favorable.
    5. In the next legislative session, your representatives have two choices. They can either raise taxes to continue to fund the projects that the DFL approved in 2023-24, or they can cut waste, fraud and unnecessary spending to balance the budget.
    6. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy – they provide thousands of jobs in our state. Small business owners are choking under taxes and mandates. If you want to save a small business, lower their taxes.
    7. Under the Democrat trifecta, Minnesota became an extremely progressive state – socially and fiscally. Extremes on either side of the aisle do not represent the majority of hard-working, average Minnesotans. Having balance in our Legislature is a good thing.
    8. Eden Prairie – you have two moderate Republicans running for House 49A and 49B. I recommend you check out Stacy Bettison for 49A or Wendi Russo for 49B and vote for these intelligent, hard-working women. Our state needs to get back on track.

    Paul Jackson, Eden Prairie
