    Supporting Morrison: A pro-choice OB-GYN for Congress

Letter to EditorBy Letter to EditorOctober 4, 20242 Mins Read

I am voting for Kelly Morrison because women’s health, wellness, and bodily autonomy are under attack. There are several strong, amazing women in Congress now, but none who are a pro-choice OB-GYN.

Kelly Morrison is not a career politician. She is an OB-GYN with over 20 years of practice in the field. Kelly first served as my Minnesota state representative in 2019 and, more recently, has been my Minnesota state senator. In both roles, she has been active, engaged, and approachable, listening to constituents. She also won many awards for her legislative work and accomplishments. She champions issues like the affordability of prescription drugs, protecting environmental gems like the Boundary Waters, addressing the mental health needs of Minnesotans, respecting military service, and fighting for women’s reproductive rights.

As contrast, many, often men, in the current Republican Party view women’s bodies as something to control. In fact, J.D. Vance, the Republican vice-presidential candidate, said in 2022 that he wants abortion to be illegal across the nation. Many of those wanting to ban or severely restrict abortion and reproductive care are not medical practitioners and do not understand the dangers to women when access is limited or prohibited. Furthermore, many do not know what it is like to be a woman, to have our bodies, or to understand how our bodies grow and change, with or without having children. For them, women’s experiences are an abstraction, and their supposed moral stances have no grounding in real life.

Kelly Morrison is a woman, a mother, and an OB-GYN practitioner. She has experienced firsthand the beauty and challenges of being a woman. Furthermore, she has experienced with her patients the joys and heartbreaks in their life journeys. She is in a unique position to bring that wisdom and experience to a lawmaking body often filled with people who want to legislate from supposed principles rather than from experience and compassion. She will be a reproductive expert and pro-choice champion in Congress. Please join me and vote for Kelly Morrison this fall.
