Clarify voting rules for newcomers in EP

Letter to EditorBy Letter to EditorOctober 2, 20242 Mins Read

First – Kudos for a well-organized and useful voter guide!

Second – The articles “EP prepares for a Nov. 5 election” on page 1 and “Illegal voting by noncitizens is rare, yet still an issue” on page 23 should both start on the front page. It seems you’re burying the key point in the first paragraph: “Only U.S. citizens are eligible to vote in this fall’s election for president and other top offices.” That fact should also have been included in your page 1 story, along with other requirements such as age, etc.

There are many newcomers to the U.S. in Eden Prairie who read EPLN (Eden Prairie Local News) and may want to vote in November. As your article on page 1 says, those applying for Minnesota driver’s licenses are now automatically enrolled as registered voters. Am I reading that correctly? If so, they may have Minnesota driver’s licenses; they may be the right age; they may even be paying taxes and utilities, but unless they are U.S. citizens, it’s my understanding that they should not be voting for “president and other top offices.”

Maybe in the next issue, how about a front-page article clarifying if and/or what those folks would be allowed to vote for, along with what measures are being taken to ensure that the laws are being followed?
