Child helps police confirm man held gun to mom’s head, threatened to shoot her

Jim BayerBy Jim BayerJuly 5, 20242 Mins Read

An 8-year-old child helped Eden Prairie police by confirming that a man held a gun to his mother’s head and threatened to shoot her.

Matthew Flora Kibble, 31, of Chaska, is charged with two felonies stemming from the June 26 incident: threats of violence with reckless disregard for risk, and receiving stolen property.

According to charging documents filed in Hennepin District Court:

Eden Prairie police officers approached a vehicle in the parking lot at 11611 Leona Road. The registered owner of the vehicle got out and began to talk to police. Kibble got out of the passenger seat and began yelling at the person who had exited the vehicle, later identified as the victim.

The woman told police that earlier, while driving to Mankato to collect money from the IRS office there, Kibble held a gun to her head. She explained that Kibble argued with her, claiming he was owed a portion of the money. During the argument, Kibble pulled out a firearm, pointed it at her, and said, “B****, I will shoot you.”

The victim’s 8-year-old child, seated in the backseat of the vehicle, confirmed to police what had happened.

The victim said she tried to find places to stop and get help but was afraid for her life, and Kibble would not let her. She saw the police car in the parking lot and saw it as her chance to get help.

The victim gave the police permission to search her vehicle. Police found a 9mm semi-automatic pistol underneath the passenger seat where Kibble had been sitting. In a post-Miranda statement, Kibble admitted the firearm was stolen and that he had possession of it, although he claimed it was the victim’s gun.

Kibble was arrested and held in lieu of $40,000 bail. He was released from custody on July 2.

If convicted, the maximum sentence for reckless disregard making threats of violence is five years imprisonment and/or a $10,000 fine. The receiving stolen property charge has a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment and/or a $100,000 fine.
