The Eden Prairie Police Department has issued a warning to residents after multiple reports of a scammer posing as a police officer.
In a Thursday police blog entry, the department reported several incidents involving a caller pretending to be with the Eden Prairie police. The caller instructs the potential victim to withdraw several thousand dollars and give it to the officer. In at least two cases, the scammer “spoofed” the general police phone number (952-949-6200) to make the call appear legitimate.
Eden Prairie police emphasized in the post that their officers will never call to ask for money or gift cards. They advised anyone receiving such a call to hang up immediately and refrain from providing any personal or financial information.
Residents who believe they may have fallen victim to this scam are urged to contact the police department at 952-949-6200.
